“Knowing the history of the Free Trade Zone is discovering that of the city.” With this statement, the Cadiz journalist José Antonio Hidalgo presented the book Zona Franca de Cádiz, 80 years of history, which describes how the current Zona Franca has come to be formed from its origins as Puerto Franco and the different delegates and presidents who have been there. leading until today. The work was born with the intention of “that people be cured of the brutal ignorance they have about the Free Trade Zone, that they see the effort made by a lot of Cadiz residents to make this institution a reality.”´”.
Hidalgo recalls in the work that 82 years ago Cádiz had problems very similar to those of now and "it was then, in 1929, when Ramón de Carranza found a new business model with few but successful examples in Europe and, after various efforts, Its constitution was approved along with that of Barcelona.” However, we had to wait until 1948, with the signing of the Franco-Perón protocol to witness the takeoff of the Free Trade Zone.
In the book, Hidalgo highlights the importance of José Ochoa, the engineer who carried out the construction management of the Interior Precinct, “a person who will be essential to build from scratch and in just 6 years what is today the Free Trade Zone.”
Highlighting the work of the different delegates and their contributions, Hidalgo concluded by explaining “that we are in a Free Trade Zone that creates employment, that attracts companies and that has a global development policy in favor of promoting the business and industrial fabric of Cádiz and its province. ”.
