Zona Franca takes measures to address water shortages and reduces losses in its facilities

The Consortium's hydraulic infrastructures have been subjected to exhaustive control and action has been taken on those that had leaks.

The actions in the conduction systems, with the installation of new meters and the repair or replacement of materials have meant that the water loss is only 1.5%, well below the general figures for the city which are 10%. %

Zona Franca works in harmony with Aguas de Cádiz after the signing of the agreement by which the water company authorized the Consortium to connect the sewage network of its interior area to the municipal network

The plan is part of the new industrial model that the Free Trade Zone has implemented in recent years based on sustainability and commitment to the environment.

The Free Trade Zone of Cádiz has initiated a plan to contribute to the extent of its possibilities to alleviate the effects of water scarcity due to the lack of rain and the current climate situation and has proceeded to carry out an exhaustive control of all its facilities to reduce the loss of water due to leaks and filtrations, which compromise water savings and increase spending not only from an economic but also an environmental point of view.

As a result of this control, the technical department, which has been working for some time on a plan based on the detection of leaks and the renewal of the pipe network, has proceeded to carry out repairs to put an end to these water leaks, which This has meant that water losses in the Consortium's facilities have been reduced to such a degree that they amount to only 1.5%.

The significant reduction in water losses in the Cádiz Free Trade Zone is better understood based on the data recently provided by Aguas de Cádiz. In 2023, the entity offered an analysis that places physical losses in the network (the sum of losses in the network and losses in connections) in the city of Cádiz at 10%, a figure that is below the national average although above the reduction of the Cádiz Free Zone, while in Spain, according to a study published in February 2023, the percentage of real losses on the volume of water supplied to the supply networks amounted to 15.4%.

It must be remembered that the Free Trade Zone of Cádiz and Aguas de Cádiz have been working in harmony since they signed a collaboration agreement at the end of 2020 by which the water company authorized the Consortium to connect the sewer network of its interior site to the network. municipal of the city. Precisely one of the main points of the agreement is to guarantee the proper functioning of the hydraulic infrastructures and the adequacy of the networks in both supply and sanitation, as well as actions to guarantee the quality of the service in optimal environmental conditions, one of which would be optimize infrastructure by avoiding water leaks in times of drought.

The Consortium has already been applying an innovative water quality monitoring system in the interior area so that its salinity is continuously controlled, which is detrimental to the subsequent purification process. It is a computer application that measures the indicated parameters in real time and sends them to the Aguas de Cádiz system to be able to act if the indicators are altered.

And the Free Trade Zone has made investments to improve the hydraulic infrastructure of its facilities, including the actions of the Comprehensive Plan for the Improvement of the Interior Precinct and the works for the separating network of the UE-ZF-08 from the exterior polygon, with a total investment of more than 700,000 euros.

Within the framework of this strategy to optimize infrastructure, guarantee water quality and within the commitment to the environment, a series of improvement and loss reduction actions have been carried out. Technicians are awaiting any data that points to a possible leak and that it is necessary to subject the water conduction systems to repair due to the leaks that occur and the loss of water. In this way, the maintenance of hydraulic infrastructures is a fundamental piece to promptly address any problem of this type.

In fact, traditional meters have been replaced by telemeters, which allow for a more accurate view and timely control of incidents or breakdowns that occur, in addition to placing new meters of this type in places where those that did not exist. As a complement and preventive measure, various minor actions have been carried out, such as the replacement of valves and diffusers.

The plan developed by the Cádiz Free Trade Zone to reduce water losses and thus contribute to alleviating the shortage due to the drought situation is included in the strategy set by the Consortium in the implementation of the new industrial model based on sustainability. the commitment to the environment and the development of new economic models around the green and blue economy.
