Cadiz, June 1, 2023
The Cádiz Free Trade Zone joins the support of San Fernando's candidacy to be the next headquarters of the World Press Freedom Conference organized annually by UNESCO since 1994. This has been approved by the Executive Committee in its last session that also authorizes the availability of the Consortium to collaborate as much as possible to achieve this initiative.
Representatives of the College of Journalists of Andalusia recently presented the proposal to the State delegate, Fran González, during a meeting held to discuss the issue. This would be the first time that this event, organized by UNESCO around World Press Freedom Day, would be held in a Spanish city.
The architects of the proposal - the College of Journalists of Andalusia in Cádiz and the San Fernando City Council - are clear that this city is the ideal one to host the Conference because it is the place where on November 10, 1810 the deputies of the Constituent Cortes proclaimed Decree IX of Political Freedom of the Press, which meant the abolition of censorship and the freedom to express and disseminate ideas.
The island municipality intends to host an event that would bring together experts, with panel programs, debates and analysis around the state of journalism and around freedom of expression and democracy worldwide.
The delegate of the Free Trade Zone, Fran González, has shown his support for holding this Conference and has advocated joining forces and institutional collaboration so that it takes place and is a success. González recalled the recent celebration of the Language Congress in Cádiz "in which we all worked hand in hand to make it a success and Cádiz take its deserved place."
