This certification agency for marine biology courses within the framework of recreational diving plans to break the world record in the number of divers who, together, will raise awareness about marine research on June 10, International Oceans Day
Cadiz, May 9, 2023
On June 10, 2023, the Spanish coast will become the scene of an unprecedented event in the field of recreational diving. The Diving Conciencia academy - a startup promoted by Incubazul, in the Free Trade Zone of Cádiz - has called on the diving centers of Spain and Portugal to carry out an initiative that commemorates the International Oceans Day and in which it is expected to beat a world record for collaboration in marine research by divers.
Buceo Conciencia, marine conservation academy and company organizing the event, has organized this event in order to join in this joint effort to learn about the state of vulnerable fish populations in the Mediterranean-Atlantic area. To date, the emerging company has brought together more than 50 diving centers along the entire Spanish coast, including much of the Iberian Peninsula, the Balearic Islands, the Canary Islands, Ceuta and Melilla.
Thus, the academy wants to beat its own record and is calling on divers to dive into the sea in search of vulnerable fish species and then report them on the Observadores del Mar platform. An online platform of the CSIC (Superior Council of Scientific Research) designed so that citizens can contribute to marine research.
This unique event will not only be an opportunity for divers to contribute to marine research, but also to demonstrate their commitment to the conservation of marine ecosystems. The organizers hope that this event, unprecedented in Spain, will have a significant impact on public awareness about the importance of the oceans and the need to protect them.
Maibe Hermoso, founder of Buceo Conciencia, already organized a similar experience in Chile in 2018. “During my PhD I needed data on a new species of shrimp. I called all the divers in the country to go look for him, each one from his place of residence, but on the same day. We managed to involve more than 300 divers and covered more than 4000 km of coastline. In addition, we found the shrimp in areas where we did not know it arrived. It was all a success".
“We are excited to lead this historic effort in the recreational diving sector,” said Maibe Hermoso. “Our goal is to understand that divers are the eyes of the ocean and therefore key actors for marine conservation. We hope that this epic event draws the attention of public opinion and motivates more people to get involved in the protection of our oceans,” said the promoter of this diving agency, who concluded by encouraging people to join, “if you are a diver, we invite you to join us.” “Join this historic initiative and help us break a world record on International Oceans Day.”
The Cádiz Free Trade Zone implements with Incubazul a benchmark project in the Blue Economy throughout Spain and in which the circumstances are created to attract and promote talent and ideas with the oceans and seas as the main focus.
