Cadiz, March 22, 2023

The Cádiz Free Zone and the Santander Free Zone will coordinate possible joint actions and projects that may be of interest to both tax areas. This was stated by the heads of both organizations during the hearing that the State delegate in the Cádiz Free Trade Zone, Fran González, held at the Cantabrian site yesterday.

Fran González met with his counterpart from Santander, Francisco Javier Fernández Mañanes, with whom he toured the facilities and saw first-hand the activity of the facility, which is the most recently created of the seven existing in Spain.

The Santander Free Trade Zone was created in 2016 and emerged as the natural evolution of the old Santander Free Warehouse, adapting to new times and emerging markets. This was founded by Decree of August 11, 1918, as an instrument to facilitate international trade. This natural evolution from free warehouse to free zone also occurred in Cádiz, whose Free Zone was created in 1929, a century after the free warehouse in the Cadiz capital.

During the visit to the Cantabrian capital, the Cádiz delegation visited the port of Santander, where they held a meeting with the top officials of the Port Authority, with whom they analyzed the best way to share synergies in two seaside cities with many points in common.

In addition, the delegate of the Cádiz Free Zone was received by the Government delegate in Cantabria, Ainoa Quiñones. Both shared experiences around institutional and current issues and recalled the close relationship that unites the provinces of Cádiz and Cantabria, since Cádiz was an important focus of Cantabrian immigration, which took over a good part of Cádiz's trade.

Fran González has expressed his satisfaction with a complete day in which "we have had the opportunity to share experiences and learn about projects from another free zone, with which we can coordinate joint actions that enrich and complement us both."

The head of the Cádiz Consortium has highlighted the many points in common "that Cádiz and Santander have and in the midst of the Language Congress, in whose actions we are actively participating, remember that the historical link, with a large Cantabrian population settled in Cádiz for many years, has survived to this day, even leaving us with typical Cádiz speech words such as chicuco."

The work meetings held have highlighted the importance of sharing synergies between two venues and two areas of Spain with important historical links, unbeatable geographical locations to access international markets and with extensive experience in activity linked to foreign trade.
