This study establishes the steps that must be taken to launch the project, which will also require an agreement with the City Council
The activity to be developed is the aquaponic industry, which consists of the combined ecological cultivation of fish and plants in recirculation systems with complementary activities linked to ecotourism and the environment.
The complex will generate economic activity and employment in the area, being pioneering, totally ecological and careful with the environment
Zona Franca de Cádiz takes another step in the development of the Aquaponics environmental project on the La Almoraima farm in the municipality of Castellar de la Frontera. The Special Delegate of the State, Jorge Ramos, accompanied by technicians from the Consortium, meets tomorrow with the mayor of the municipality, Juan Casanova, and municipal technicians to whom he will deliver the document for the implementation of the complex, once the land located on the farm was transferred to the Consistory by the Ministry of Agriculture.
The writing of this document defines and limits the urban feasibility of the project with the intentions and uses that are intended to be implemented and the steps to follow to develop it. In fact, among these procedures is the need to sign an agreement between the Free Zone and the City Council to govern the activities to be carried out.
The study presented specifies that this novel initiative - a pioneer in Spain - consists of producing fish and plants in the same cycle in recirculation systems, combining it with complementary activities linked to ecotourism with nature classrooms, green spaces and leisure.
Furthermore, the use of this system for the cultivation and development of food has the main advantage of saving water and reducing the use of fertilizers and environmental contaminants, which is why it is perfectly suitable for this area of La Almoraima, as it is totally ecological and careful with the environment.
Thus, the planned uses are agro-ecological as the main use, which includes the cultivation of plants in inert or soilless substrates (hydroponics), aquaculture (cultivation of aquatic species in a controlled environment) and greenhouses for productive areas and research areas; and as secondary or complementary uses, ecotourism is proposed – which includes educational facilities around nature classrooms and agro-tourism –, green areas and recreation and leisure areas.
Special attention has been paid to the surroundings and the environment, for which the planned facilities are located in exactly the same locations, currently in ruins, where the old military facilities, disused for many years, were located.
With the project of an environmental complex in La Almoraima, Zona Franca fulfills the purpose of promoting economic activity and the social and business revitalization of a municipality in Campo de Gibraltar, Castellar de la Frontera, in which it had not acted to date, in which a productive initiative linked to the environment will be carried out.
